According to the world health organization constitution it defines health as a state of complete physical mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The notion physical fitness is used in two meanings; general fitness and task oriented fitness.
GENERAL HEALTH AND FITNESS
In its most general meaning, general fitness is a general state of good physical health. a physical handicapped person's body may be physically fit(healthy) though its ability is likely to be less than optimum.
General physical fitness is attributed to regular exercise and proper eating habits that a healthy human body relies on. Physical fitness touches on various areas such as flexibility ,cardio -respiratory endurance and strength of a person.
a) FLEXIBILTY-a physically healthy person should be able to deliberately stretch a specific muscle or tendon and the advantage of this is that it improves the muscle’s felt elasticity and at the same time achieve comfortable muscle tone. When one wakes up from sleep he or she is likely to stretch his or her body a sign of physical fitness.
b) CARDIO-RESPIRATORY ENDURANCE- Endurance is the ability of an organism to exert itself and remain active for a long period of time as well as its ability to resist, withstand, recover from and have immunity to trauma, wounds or fatigue. In humans it revolves around both aerobic and anaerobic exercise. Some people might not be able to walk over long distances and therefore deemed as not physical fit.
c) STRENGTH- physical strength is also a measure of physical fitness. An individuals physical strength is determined by two factors; the cross sectional area of muscle fibers recruited to generate force and the intensity of the recruitment. This is to mean the size of the muscle and the extent to which the muscle is involved are considered when describing the strength of a person. It is a general view that someone would be considered physically fit if he or she is strong and not weak.
TASK ORIENTED FITNESS
Apart from general fitness, the other physical fitness is the ability of a person to perform or carry out a task with reasonable efficiency. It is well known that not all persons in a society can go to the military but only those who are physical fit for the service. Basing on the military style fitness, students or recruits are expected to do push up, sit ups, pull ups and jumping jacks as well as more obscure drills such as flutter kicks, sun worshippers and flame as part of the course. In the military course a workout will include a short run apart from the obvious and thus the physically handicapped fall short in joining the military. Just like people in the military, athletes have special physical fitness that allows them to do certain sports. Above all special training helps these athletes to perform well in their sports.
Physical health and fitness is a measure of how healthy a person is. The various categories of physical fitness have to be considered when allocating tasks to people. Task-oriented physical fitness is specific when compared to general fitness.
